3 years later...

I wanted to go to law school with a pretty lofty goal-- get in to a top law school, study feminist jurisprudence or critical race studies and become a law professor in the same. Feminist legal theory and critical race both require one to take on the view that the law as it stands cannot rectify issues of feminism or racism because the current system has been founded on/premised upon/and reliant on doctrines adhering to male dominance and the upholding of racist ideas. Yea pretty gnarly.

I would find out 3 years later, in my last year of law school, that not only does such radical ideas gain blank stares from most people but it garners eye rolls and a smile insinuating "how cute, you little feminist."

I long miss the 3 hours discussion after my women's studies classes with my fellow undergrads. I miss the rhetoric of change and simply exploding the current power system we live on so these theory can take root. Moving beyond the idea that feminism is about equality in the form of equal access-- but rather recognizing the power dynamics at work. Equal rights and sameness feminism ends when women are allowed access to things men have long been doing. But does allowing women to vote, women to engage in combat in the military or allowed to go to academies-- are those things REALLY going to trickle down to women in need. Do they address the issues of impoverished women deal with? We had called for a theory which looked to the intersectionality of race and sex. Give voice to needs that are not dictated by white liberal feminist. Address issues of rape, sexual assault, domestic violence. Issues that women feel and live and disproportionally suffer.

That was a long time ago. Until I took feminist jurisprudence as 3L now.

Lets put my blog to some use. For the next three weeks I will document my research and findings and writings on a 25 page paper set on publication regarding an issue in feminism I would like to address. Sky's the limit but here will be my little piece of the pie for the next several weeks.

Day 1
Topic: Sex Workers
Issues: what is prostitution, sex workers as agent or victim, discussions of sex work through the lens of feminism and the legalization vs decrimination of sex work (pros, cons, difficulties), intersection of race and sex

wish me luck. I'm excited, a true rarity in law school.
